In the church, we now have a lot of Joseph-idolatry. People who have lost any convictions about the current prophetic mantle in the church tend to go back to Joseph Smith and cut out the things he taught that don’t fit their paradigm, in an effort to create a Joseph in their own image. And they call this figment of their imagination “Mormonism.” So we have narratives that Joseph was not polygamous, that he had an “expansive” vision that didn’t care what people actually believed, and so forth.
This isn’t new. The ages-old conflict has always been between living prophets and idolaters who say If I had lived in times of old, I would have followed those “true prophets” of the past. After all, prophets of the past can’t explain themselves in the present. So why not make them into idols that do our bidding?
When Joseph Smith baptized his father into the newly formally-established Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints, Joseph became an emotional wreck, sobbing by himself for a while. He cried out “Oh! My God I have lived to see my father baptized into the true church of Jesus Christ!”
Not,
“I have lived to see my father baptized into some amorphous concept called Mormonism, but if he were baptized somewhere else that would be fine too, because Mormonism is so ‘expansive’ that it sees all truth and authority claims as relative and stuff…”
On that “liberty of believing as I please” quote
Yes, Joseph Smith said that it wasn’t right to censure Pelatiah Brown for his weird interpretation of a passage in the Book of Revelation. “I want the liberty of believing as I please, it feels so good not to be tramelled. It don’t prove that a man is not a good man, because he errs in doctrine.” Joseph obviously didn’t think that this difference of opinion mattered very much.
But then Joseph publicly made fun of Pelatiah Brown’s interpretation:
“I could not help laughing at the idea of God making use of the figure of a beast to represent the kingdom of God on the earth, when he could as well have used a far more noble and consistent figure.”
Joseph did that because he was not a relativist. Run a quick scripture search on the word “unbelief” and look at the contexts where that word is used. See how sharply it is condemned in the scriptures Joseph gave us.
On infallibility
Neither Joseph nor any church leader since has ever taught that prophets are infallible, but it is something church members assume, largely due to scriptures given to us through Joseph:
21:4 Wherefore, meaning the church, thou shalt give heed unto all his words and commandments which he shall give unto you as he receiveth them, walking in all holiness before me;
5 For his word ye shall receive, as if from mine own mouth, in all patience and faith.
22:2 Wherefore, although a man should be baptized an hundred times it availeth him nothing, for you cannot enter in at the strait gate by the law of Moses, neither by your dead works.
3 For it is because of your dead works that I have caused this last covenant and this church to be built up unto me, even as in days of old.
4 Wherefore, enter ye in at the gate, as I have commanded, and seek not to counsel your God.
41:5 He that receiveth my law and doeth it, the same is my disciple; and he that saith he receiveth it and doeth it not, the same is not my disciple, and shall be cast out from among you;
43:2 For behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, that ye have received a commandment for a law unto my church, through him whom I have appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations from my hand.
3 And this ye shall know assuredly—that there is none other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me.
4 But verily, verily, I say unto you, that none else shall be appointed unto this gift except it be through him; for if it be taken from him he shall not have power except to appoint another in his stead.
5 And this shall be a law unto you, that ye receive not the teachings of any that shall come before you as revelations or commandments;
6 And this I give unto you that you may not be deceived, that you may know they are not of me.
7 For verily I say unto you, that he that is ordained of me shall come in at the gate and be ordained as I have told you before, to teach those revelations which you have received and shall receive through him whom I have appointed.
11 Again I say unto you, that it shall not be given to any one to go forth to preach my gospel, or to build up my church, except he be ordained by some one who has authority, and it is known to the church that he has authority and has been regularly ordained by the heads of the church.
50:8 But the hypocrites shall be detected and shall be cut off, either in life or in death, even as I will; and wo unto them who are cut off from my church, for the same are overcome of the world.
9 Wherefore, let every man beware lest he do that which is not in truth and righteousness before me.
56:14 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto my people—you have many things to do and to repent of; for behold, your sins have come up unto me, and are not pardoned, because you seek to counsel in your own ways.
64:15 Behold, I, the Lord, was angry with him who was my servant Ezra Booth, and also my servant Isaac Morley, for they kept not the law, neither the commandment;
16 They sought evil in their hearts, and I, the Lord, withheld my Spirit. They condemned for evil that thing in which there was no evil; nevertheless I have forgiven my servant Isaac Morley.
112:30 For unto you, the Twelve, and those, the First Presidency, who are appointed with you to be your counselors and your leaders, is the power of this priesthood given, for the last days and for the last time, in the which is the dispensation of the fulness of times,
31 Which power you hold, in connection with all those who have received a dispensation at any time from the beginning of the creation;
32 For verily I say unto you, the keys of the dispensation, which ye have received, have come down from the fathers, and last of all, being sent down from heaven unto you.
124:84 And with my servant Almon Babbitt, there are many things with which I am not pleased; behold, he aspireth to establish his counsel instead of the counsel which I have ordained, even that of the Presidency of my Church; and he setteth up a golden calf for the worship of my people.
121:16 Cursed are all those that shall lift up the heel against mine anointed, saith the Lord, and cry they have sinned when they have not sinned before me, saith the Lord, but have done that which was meet in mine eyes, and which I commanded them.
17 But those who cry transgression do it because they are the servants of sin, and are the children of disobedience themselves.
18 And those who swear falsely against my servants, that they might bring them into bondage and death—
19 Wo unto them; because they have offended my little ones they shall be severed from the ordinances of mine house.
20 Their basket shall not be full, their houses and their barns shall perish, and they themselves shall be despised by those that flattered them.
21 They shall not have right to the priesthood, nor their posterity after them from generation to generation.
22 It had been better for them that a millstone had been hanged about their necks, and they drowned in the depth of the sea.
